    La technologie peut faire des choses assez étonnantes. Grands photographes
    et vidéastes connaissent leurs caméras si bien, qu’ils peuvent manipuler le
    temps, la lumière et le mouvement pour créer de superbes images….Mettre
    un iPhone 4 à l’intérieur de son instrument et a découvert quelque chose
    d’incroyable. Regardez la vidéo ci-dessous, pour savoir ce qui provoque
    cet effet fou, la caméra à l’intérieur de l’iPhone 4 capture vidéo d’une
    manière différente de votre appareil photo typique en utilisant un volet
    roulant. Au lieu de prendre un tas de photos rapidement, et ensuite les
    mettre ensemble pour faire une vidéo, la caméra balaye la place à travers
    l’espace. Par conséquent, la scène n’est pas complètement capturée dans une
    trame. C’est ce que nous fait voir les cordes de guitare vibrante.

    really see the vibrations that make up good music…..

    You can do this with any camera/camera phone: the magic is the framerate.
    But great teaching tool to show what waves, how thickness of strings affect
    the tone etc.

    Here’s the science, for those saying it is fake.

    No, the strings aren’t coiling as they appear to in this video. This
    illusion is caused by a side effect of camera sensor technology known as
    “rolling shutter”.

    When a camera sensor is recording an image or frame of a video, it doesn’t
    record the entire area of the sensor at once. It instead records one line
    at a time from top to bottom (or left to right in this video, since it is
    rotated), which allows some time to pass between each line. As the strings
    osculate back and forth, they move much faster than the scan speed of the
    sensor, and will be at up or down positions multiple times before one frame
    is scanned. Low frequency will mean fewer peaks and valleys, high frequency
    will produce many. Thus, we have the sine wave of the string frozen in one
    frame after the other, making the fascinating effect we see here.

    With about a third of these comments saying that this is a FAKE, it appears
    to be worthy of a Mythbusters episode. I was skeptical, so I tried it
    myself. I used 3 different models of iPhones: 4S, 4 and 6. All failed to
    replicate the effect. Then, assuming the observed vibration patterns were
    not fake, I suspected that it might be an artifact of the computer’s video
    player. I imported all the files. . . no change, no effect. One of my HS
    students (I’m a teacher) suggested that perhaps the phone needed to be
    rotated inside the guitar perpendicular to the string so that the strings
    make a 90 deg angle to the phone lengthwise. This time we used an iPhone
    5S. IT WORKED. . .TWICE!! We saw the peaks and troughs of the waves just
    like this video. Just to be sure, we rotated the 5S 90 deg away from the
    orientation that worked. Then, the the effect was NOT OBSERVED. So, the
    camera orientation to the strings seems to make all the difference in
    seeing the guitar string standing wave shapes!

    I’m not familiar with the rolling shutter effect, but whatever video effect
    is operating here with these iPhones, it’s geometry-dependent.

    This is pretty remarkable. A few days ago, my 7 year old got her hands on
    her mom’s old guitar and has been messing with plucking the strings. I was
    trying to teach her about how the vibrations of the strings were what was
    causing the sound, and that each vibration was different. She thought this
    video was really cool and it really made our little discussion make sense.
    Being able to see how each note made a different wave was pretty incredible
    for both of us. Thanks for posting/sharing!

    Woah woah woah…. Has anyone tried this out? Why don’t we see the same
    peaks and troughs when we film a guitarist from OUTSIDE his guitar? I
    smell bullshit. Cheesy iphone technology bullshit.

    For those saying this is fake, there are other videos showing this same
    effect. It takes a digital camera with a high framerate (filming in bright
    light). Also, the camera needs to be oriented correctly for the “rolling
    shutter” to show the waves. Check out the video “vibrations of strings on a
    digital camera”.

    I do like the video. Pretty cool. But I just want to say that this does not
    show accurately how the strings actually look. This image happens because
    the phones camera chip cannot process the actual movement of the strings
    accurately . Faulty digital process. This is not what strings actually
    look like when played..

    The camera inside of the iPhone 4 captures video in a different way than
    your typical camera by using a rolling shutter. Instead of taking a bunch
    of pictures quickly, and then putting them together to make a video, the
    camera instead scans across the space. Therefore, the scene isn’t
    completely captured in one frame. That’s what makes us see the guitar
    strings vibrating.
